Springer in Germany Axel Springer Verlag, Germany's biggest newspaper publishing house, was established in 1946 with the launch of a magazine named Nordwestdeutsche Hefte.Axel, son of Hinrich Springer, started it after his father's newspaper business was closed in 1941 by the Nazi government. Springer's International Strategy In the late 1980s, Axel Springer started converting itself from a German publisher to an internationalmedia company. Initially it concentrated on the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. In 1988, it entered Hungary through a joint venture with the local magazine publishing house, Budapest GmbH and the local newspaper publishing company, UngarnGmbH.
